This workshop is supported in whole or in part by the National Science Foundation (NSF) under Award No. 2542375. In compliance with the NSF Proposal & Award Policies and Procedures Guide (PAPPG), Chapter II.F.8, all participants are provided with this policy, which addresses sexual harassment, other forms of harassment, and sexual assault, and which describes clear and accessible means of reporting violations and making a complaint.
1. Our commitment
The organizers of Sunawi are committed to providing a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for everyone, free from harassment and discrimination of any kind. We value the participation of every member of our community — Indigenous language carriers, educators, and community members; researchers and students; technologists; funders; and guests — and we want everyone to be treated with dignity and respect.
Who this applies to. This Code of Conduct applies to all participants — including speakers, panelists, attendees, organizers, staff, volunteers, sponsors, vendors, and guests.
Where this applies. It applies to all workshop-related settings, including sessions and presentations, meals and receptions, social and networking events, field trips or excursions, shared transportation and lodging arranged through the workshop, and any online or virtual components (video calls, chat, shared documents, email, and social media connected to the event).
Because Sunawi is hosted on the LMU campus, Loyola Marymount University's policies and the LMU Department of Public Safety apply directly to conduct that occurs during the workshop, as described below.
2. Expected behavior
All participants are expected to:
- Treat one another with respect, courtesy, and good faith.
- Communicate openly and consider differing viewpoints and experiences with an open mind.
- Be mindful of your surroundings and of fellow participants; alert an organizer if you notice a dangerous situation, someone in distress, or a violation of this Code.
- Respect the cultural protocols, knowledge, languages, and communities represented at this workshop, and follow any guidance organizers or community members provide about recording, photographing, sharing, or attributing what is presented.
- Comply with the rules and policies of Loyola Marymount University and of any venue used for the workshop.
3. Unacceptable behavior
Consistent with NSF policy, the following behavior will not be tolerated, whether carried out verbally, physically, electronically, or in written form:
- Harassment of any person, including sexual harassment, and harassment based on race, color, national or ethnic origin, ancestry, sex, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, age, religion, disability, veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
- Sexual harassment, sexual misconduct, or sexual assault, including unwelcome sexual attention, advances, or physical contact.
- Abuse of any person, including stalking, bullying, intimidation, or hazing of any kind.
- Conduct that is unwelcome, offensive, indecent, obscene, or disorderly, including offensive verbal comments, displaying sexual or otherwise inappropriate images or materials, and sustained disruption of sessions or events.
- Discrimination, threats or incitement of violence, or retaliation against anyone who reports a concern or participates in an investigation.
- Photographing, recording, or sharing a person, presentation, or cultural material against their stated wishes or the organizers' guidance.
This list is illustrative, not exhaustive. Participants asked to stop any unacceptable behavior are expected to comply immediately.
4. Consequences
Workshop organizers may take any action they deem appropriate to protect participants and uphold this Code, up to and including:
- A formal warning and a request to stop the behavior immediately;
- Removal from a session, event, or venue;
- Expulsion from the workshop without warning and without refund of any registration fee or travel reimbursement;
- Exclusion from future Sunawi events; and
- Referral to Loyola Marymount University, the participant's home institution or employer, the National Science Foundation, and/or law enforcement.
Conduct that may violate LMU policy or the law will be referred to the appropriate LMU office or authorities, who will respond under their own procedures. The National Science Foundation may also take unilateral action under the terms of the award to protect the safety of personnel.
5. How to report a concern
If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 911, or contact the LMU Department of Public Safety at 310.338.2893 (or 222 from any campus landline). DPS is available 24/7.
You can report a violation of this Code through any of the channels below. You are always free to use whichever contact you are most comfortable with — you do not have to report to the workshop organizers first.

Please note that organizers and many LMU employees are responsible employees who may be obligated to share certain reports (for example, of sexual misconduct) with the LMU Title IX Coordinator. If you wish to speak with someone confidentially, LMU offers confidential advocacy and counseling resources (such as LMU CARES and counseling services); the Title IX office can direct you to them.
7. Non-retaliation
Retaliation against anyone who reports a concern in good faith, or who participates in an investigation, is strictly prohibited and is itself a violation of this Code and of LMU policy. Reports made in good faith will not result in adverse treatment, even if the concern is ultimately not substantiated.
8. Loyola Marymount University policies
This Code is intended to complement, not replace, LMU's policies, which govern conduct on campus and define the formal complaint and investigation processes:
- Student Sexual and Interpersonal Misconduct Policy
- Faculty and Staff Title IX / Sexual Harassment Policy
- Discriminatory Harassment, Retaliation, and Sexual and Interpersonal Misconduct Complaint Process
- LMU Statement of Non-Discrimination
- Title IX policies and processes (index)
9. National Science Foundation statement
It is NSF policy to foster safe and harassment-free environments wherever science is conducted (PAPPG 24-1, Chapter II.E.9 and II.F.8). NSF prohibits (1) abuse of any person — including harassment, stalking, bullying, or hazing, whether verbal, physical, electronic, or written — and (2) conduct that is unwelcome, offensive, indecent, obscene, or disorderly. NSF may take unilateral action as necessary under the terms of the award to protect the safety of personnel, and the awardee institution is required to notify NSF of findings or determinations of harassment involving award personnel, or the placement of such personnel on administrative leave related to a harassment investigation.
By participating in the Sunawi workshop, you agree to abide by this Code of Conduct. Thank you for helping us make this a safe, respectful, and welcoming gathering for everyone. Questions about this policy may be directed to Jared Coleman (jared.coleman@lmu.edu).
